about

Pulluvan Pattu is a traditional folk music and ritualistic practice from the Indian state of Kerala. It involves the singing of songs and performing rituals, accompanied by unique instruments like the Pulluvakudam and Naaradhaveena. Pulluvan Pattu is used for various purposes, including invoking deities, narrating legends, and performing exorcisms to banish malevolent spirits. It holds significant cultural and spiritual importance in Kerala's heritage. The lyrics tell tales of gods and goddesses, of nature's bounty, and of the profound connection between humanity and the divine.

The lyrics are laden with centuries-old wisdom, passed down through generations. Accompanying the song is the rhythmic beat of the Pulluvakudam, an instrument known for its potent resonance. The percussive sounds build a metaphysical barrier, enveloping the space with protective vibrations. The steady thumping of the percussion instrument sets the tempo for the ritual. The voice carries a blend of devotion and authority as they call upon the spirits to leave the afflicted soul.

The term pullu means a bird of omen and pattu, means song. These recordings present Sudharman Chundal, a master practionioner of the Pulluvan Pattu tradition, sings, plays the Pulluvakudam and the Naaradhaveena. This album starts off with introducing the instruments, followed by documentation of a ritual exorcism in a family temple in Chavakkad,Kerala. These ancient rituals, guided by Sudharman Chundal hold the power to banish malevolent spirits and bring solace to those plagued by the supernatural.

The Pulluvan community is an indigenous community under the Hindu religion in the state of Kerala.

The exorcism ghost songs narrate tales of celestial battles, deities, and the protection they offer. The lyrics serve as a beacon of hope and strength for the afflicted, as they emphasize the might of divine forces over malevolent entities. As the Pulluvan's song reaches its zenith, it is believed that the malevolent spirits are compelled to depart, leaving the afflicted soul in peace.
